NCC Presents A Conversation with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's all-time leading scorer and a six-time NBA champion, will speak about his life as an activist and athlete.

Bethlehem, PA (03/22/2021) — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points, a six-time NBA champion and the league's only six-time MVP, will be the keynote speaker of Northampton Community College's (NCC) Annual Humanities Program for academic year 2020-2021. The virtual live event, "A Conversation with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar," will take place on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. His talk will focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. Time Magazine dubbed him "History's Greatest Player" and ESPN and The Pac 12 named him the #1 Collegiate Athlete of the 21st century. He is one of a handful of influential and respected black men in America who has a national platform as a regular contributing columnist for newspapers and magazines around the world, such as The Guardian, The Los Angeles Times, and The Hollywood Reporter, where he shares his thoughts on some of the most socially relevant and politically controversial topics facing our nation today. After 50 years as an athlete and activist, he offers his perspectives as a nationally recognized speaker who regularly appears on the lecture circuit. He is also an award-winning five-time Columnist of the Year by The Southern California Journalism Awards.

Currently, Abdul-Jabbar serves as the chairman of his Skyhook Foundation whose mission is to "Give Kids a Shot That Can't be Blocked" by bringing educational STEM opportunities to underserved communities through innovative outdoor environmental learning which allows Los Angeles Unified School District fourth and fifth graders to soar above the four walls of the classroom. His goal is to make science, technology, engineering and math interactive, multi-sensory, relevant, and most importantly - fun. Abdul-Jabbar was named California STEM Ambassador because of his commitment to youth education.

A New York Times bestselling author, he has written 17 books and is currently writing a series of graphic novels and historical books.

His Emmy-award winning HBO Sports documentary, "Kareem: Minority of One," is HBO's most watched and highest-rated sports documentary of all time. He was in the writer's room for Season 5 of Hulu's Veronica Mars and was Emmy-nominated as narrator for "Black Patriots; Heroes of the Revolution," and is currently in development on a series of shows for The History Channel.

Among his many awards and accomplishments are The Ford Medal of Freedom, The Rosa Parks Award, and The Double Helix Medal. President Barack Obama awarded Abdul-Jabbar The Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is considered our nation's highest civilian honor.
