NCC Offers New Certified Recovery Specialist Training

Individuals in recovery can get certified to help others

Bethlehem, PA (09/05/2019) — Northampton Community College (NCC) is offering the new Certified Recovery Specialist (CRS) credential for individuals in recovery from Substance Use Disorders who wish to help others move into and through the recovery process as peer support. Completion of this course will facilitate the student towards Pennsylvania state certification as a certified peer recovery specialist. Understanding the requirements of the certification along with the role of the CRS in practice is critical before committing to training.

Requirements
As a CRS, an individual accepts and agrees that their experience as a person in recovery from a substance use condition will be known by their colleagues, persons served, and others with whom they may share that they have achieved this credential. A person with lived experience must attest that they have personal, lived recovery experience in a continuous manner for a minimum of 18 months to be eligible for the CRS credential.

Course outcomes
• Acquire requisite skills to supervise people in recovery from substance use disorder by developing crisis plans, strategies for recovery protection, and personalized interventions
• Learn the roles and duties of a CRS across diverse workspaces
• Develop effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with up-to-date knowledge of person-first recovery and mental health language
• Become familiar with ethical standards and boundaries defined by PA state certification board

About the credentialUpon completion of training, participants must satisfy the requirements established by the PA Certification Board (pacertboard.org/certifications) and pass the State CRS exam. The one-time fee of $125.00 for the exam is not included in the course fee. CRS license is valid for 2 years. Renewal is the responsibility of the student.
